April 18, 2012

Global Connections…Are You In?

How would you even start to connect with people all over the world?

You can find out on Thursday when you meet Johan Horak from Simonstown, South Africa.  Simonstown is located about 45 minutes outside of Cape Town, South Africa and is where his wife manages over 300 vacation rental properties and he is connecting their part of the world with social media daily.

Johan Horak

Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. MST join us on the Cosmic Cow Pie blogtalkradio show and find out how Johan is connecting daily with people from around the globe on Google+.  Set a reminder here to join us online, ask questions in the chat room, call in during the show 347-994-1903 or post anything you would like discussed in the comments for discussion on the live show, Thursday

Johan’s story is very interesting and will touch the heart of anyone listening.  He started his career with visions of being a CEO in the metal industry in South Africa where he came from Johannesburg.  He evolved into owning one of the top producing second hand stores in South Africa and now he helps people share their message with the world through social media.

Johan published a post on google+ that went “cosmic” with over 168 comments on “14 ways to Learn How to Helpfully Ride The Coattails of Google+ influencers”  We will be discussing his strategy and how it worked out. My initial contact with Johan came from a Pinterest conversation on Google+ where we were talking with Guy Kawasaki of former Apple fame and currently “What The Plus” e-book fame about the status of Pinteresst in the social media hierarchy.  The connection goes full circle in social media and how it can connect the global dots.

Johan will share the trials and practice it has taken to be able to communicate with anyone around the world on Google+  This is what he says about the platform “Never in my life have I come across such an resistant free platform. I am able to communicate with the most influential to the latest newbie…..

This is a social media principle I ascribe to: Before you sell you need to create cultivation pools where you can nature long term trusting relationships…..The focus for me was not on return on investment anymore. Input vs output bull. I became like an artist. I did what I love first. At all cost before I chase anything. Now the fun started….

I am challenged by new methods. How do I use these tools to brand businesses and individuals. I tend see communication opportunities in a strategy and branding way. This means that I easily identify new technology that solves these problems. Internal and external. It’s natural for me to package various communications solution in a user friendly way.”

It will be exciting to talk to Johan Horak about his social media success and his wife Elmarie’s 300 properties available through Cape Holiday Home Rentals.

Connect with Johan Horvak on your global journey in social media.

Children And Sex Slavery

January 19, 2011

Does this sound like a 60 minute documentary?

Sex slavery  is something that 12,000 girls in Nepal are abducted for every year.  The children just end up missing.  Sometimes the parents have to make a horrible choice.

“Would you sell your daughter to avoid starving?”

Most people reading this post will never have to answer that question but there are millions around the world that have to make the decision on a daily basis.

  • The average family in Nepal makes only $210 per year.
  • The cost to buy uniforms and eat at school is $50.00 per year.
  • A family with 4 or 5 children has to decide who can go to school and survive and who will have to be “taken by an employer” to survive on their own.
  • The parent does not know what will become of the girls “taken by an employer” they are simply hoping they can eat.
  • The life span of a girl taken into “sex slavery” by an “employer”  is about 3 years before they die from aids.
  • Many of the girls are raped 10 to 12 times on their first day in service.
  • Men with aids in the culture think that having sex with a virgin could possibly cure them of aids.

Thinking Globally Acting Locally is the theme of the Spring 2011 Semester at Sea Voyage. The participants are learning about the new term “glocal.”  Taking the lessons we are learning from around the globe and applying the message to our local community is taking us “glocal.”

The message in the post is to stimulate thinking about what is going on in the world, give you an option to help and then motivate you to take some local action with a cause that is near and dear to your heart.

Currently I am traveling around the world with a group of 605 college students, 66 lifelong learners and 70 TOP EDUCATORS has built up HIGH expectations of a “transformational” voyage. Speaking with new people every day at meal time creates opportunities to learn and share with one another like none other we have ever experienced.  Taking classes, observing in the Field  Programs, listening to speakers who are on the ship to share how they are making a difference in the world one  person at at time and explaining how they accomplished it is inspiring. Today the message moved me to tears  at least three times.

JEFFREY A. KOTTLER, Ph.D. Professor of Psychology was our speaker in Global Studies class today.

Jeffrey A. Kottler

He  has written over 80 books including a recent New York Times best seller  “The Last Victim: Inside the Minds of Serial Killers”  which is now a movie produced by Clark Peterson who also produced the film, Monster. The film “Dear Mr. Gacy” earned an Academy Award for best actress.

Dr. Kottler spoke on “Promoting Social Justice.” His accounts of helping save the lives of two specific girls are an inspiration to all.  Now through his program he is helping over 150 Nepali girls and keeping them from “disappearing” into sex slavery.  $50.00 initially saved Inu Pavivar from being sold into sex slavery and allowed her to attend school in her village. Her story stimulated a movement called “Empower Nepali Girls Foundation.”  Dr. Kottler ultimately had to go back each year to check on her to make sure the $50.00 was being spent on her education and NOT lining the pockets of some other entity.  This is a true success story and now….

Inu ParivarInu Pariyar, our first student to receive a university scholarship, working in the media and radio studio at Rangsit University in Thailand. She is studying communication and media, fields that are especially impoverished in her own country of Nepal.”

The life of another young girl with a deadly infection on her face was saved for $14.00 in medical bills. Dr. Kottler’s message helped us see how important small donations can be when they are given to the right organizations.   Read details about this important project at Empower Nepali Girls Foundation.

More important facts:

* Facebook group is open to join: Empower Nepali Girls Foundation

* Empower Nepali Girls Foundation is a grassroots in that we have no paid staff and no office.  Everyone pays their own expenses; that means that 90% of money donated goes DIRECTLY to keep a lower caste girl in school and prevents her being sold into sex slavery.

* There are 12,000 Nepali girls each year sold into slavery.

* The foundation visits every girl’s home, every year to make sure she’s okay, has enough to eat, and that        her family supports the education.

* The group is currently supporting over 150 girls

* $125 keeps a girl in primary or secondary school for a year!

* As the girls get older and begin university and technical and medical school, the cost jumps to about $3,000 per girl per year.

* The group operates in 9 different villages in the most remote, neglected parts of the country of Nepal.

Empowering Nepali Girls

Jeffery Kottler Ph.D. asks introspective questions that when answered might help change the world:

“What is it that leads people to help others, even when they do so at great personal sacrifice?

What is it that motivates you to reach out to others in need?

How are those involved in social justice and altruistic projects transformed by their experiences?”

PLEASE, access all the links in this post and discover how rewarding it is to serve others and think about how you can make a difference in your own community or around the world. Thinking globally Acting Locally.

  • When you give your time and energy you are sharing an integral part of yourself.
  • You are helping people who are not part of a tribe.
  • It is hard work and a selfless act taking your time and energy to give to others.

Thank you, JEFFREY A. KOTTLER, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Spring 2011Semester at Sea for showing us the way that one person can make a huge difference.

Follow us around the world!

Pie Happens!

January 11, 2011

Cosmic Cow Pie…Cosmic Cloud Pies…What do you see?

On the journey to “Connect The Dots Around The World” flying from Phoenix to Charlotte to Nassau I looked out the plane window and saw Cosmic Cow Pies… it looked like a field of Cloud Pies!   A much more “cosmic” visual than those actually left in a field by a cow! COSMIC CLOUD PIES aka Cosmic Cow Pies. What do you think?

Cosmic Cloud Pies

The message came through the clouds and I could see the shadows on the ocean.  Very symbolic of the Cloud Pies that we have to navigate in life.

Cosmic Cloud Pies create shadows in life

All the “pies” flying around create shadows in life and when the clouds go away with the light of the sunshine the path clears up and we have smooth sailing…..  balance and no stress.

Cosmic Cloud Pies Disolved

Navigating the Cosmic Cloud Pies of life aka Cosmic Cow Pies of life can be fun and easy when you apply the 14 principles found in Cosmic Cow Pie…Connecting The Dots.

Be sure to join the contest to win a trip to one of the seven wonders of the world!  Play: Where in the world is Carra Riley?

Can’t wait to read what you think of the Cloud Pie concept!

Bring Your A Game to Play “Where in the World is Carra Riley?”

January 8, 2011

Carra Riley is a writer, speaker, small business and real estate consultant going on a 104 day voyage around the world on Semester at Sea with her husband Tom. They live in Williams, Arizona and are taking their local community with them as they travel from the East to the West. This is the announcement post of the new INTERNATIONAL game… Where in the world is Carra Riley?

The Theme of the Spring 2011 voyage is  “Global Interdependencies: Thinking Globally Acting Locally”

7 wonders of the world

Williams, Arizona IS an International melting pot with visitors coming from all over the world as it is the “Gateway” to one of the SEVEN natural  wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon. Photo image courtesy of Bob Ribokas His appreciation of one of the seven wonders of the world is amazing!

As the Author of Cosmic Cow Pie…Connecting The Dots I am inviting you to PLAY a game of engaging as we journey around the world sharing transformational concepts and information.

My vision of the trip for the experience is three fold.

  1. Learning how we are connected globally, what the outcomes of this connection are and how we can be a positive force in this process as we go “glocal”.
  2. Bring back the message from around the GLOBE on how we can better serve those coming to visit our country and specifically our local Williams, Arizona community.
  3. The contestants can ALL take the information they are sharing and then implement those ideas in their community.

Carra has been creating videos on youtube with her WilliamsArizona1 channel and posting pictures of this diverse community on flickr. She has posted on her blog information about fasinating local places to go and things to do in the Williams area such as Bearizona, The Grand Canyon Railway and the Grand Canyon Coffee and Cafe.

Carra and Tom love their local community and are looking at this experience as an opportunity to help bring global issues and concerns back to the local community to process this information and start thinking about how all the dots connect together. The Williams News ran a great story about the adventure and Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce is excited about the opportunity to share Williams with the world!
